RELATIONAL SYNTAx:

Evidence-based design strategy in Architecture

Complex buildings

Research & Design tool development
Design strategies of building types

The research is based on Space Syntax
theory which assesses space in built
environment as configuration of social
networks.

The research adds to the theory by investigating further into relations
between people’s movement and
experience in space to discover logics or
syntaxes that are intrinsic ‘design
strategies’ of each built environment.
Any piece of space can be shown as a set
of relations between structural,
experiential, functional and architectural
elements dimensions.

These four dimensions can be grouped into strings of relations called Relational Syntax.
Each building type is seen as having its
shared spatial identity. Design strategies
of shopping malls/ department stores are
the subjects of the current research.
